Background

Since 2018, Arev has designed artificial intelligence models used to assess movements in the stock market. Arev has applied similar methods in collaboration with the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute in assessing the population sizes of cod and haddock, as can be seen here. Data from baseline survey expeditions by the Marine Research Institute has been used to develop machine learning models.
Arev and the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute have now signed a letter of intent for continued cooperation regarding research and development in stock assessment. This declaration entails that the Marine Research Institute will have access to the models developed by Arev, and Arev will receive data to use in the development of these models. Analysis and report writing will be carried out by mutual agreement, and scientific working practices will be upheld. One employee of the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute will be involved in each publication.
Objectives of the collaboration
The aim of this collaboration is to combine our strengths, as it is difficult to build accurate models without good data. That is where the Marine Research Institute comes in. In return, what Arev offers is a particular specialisation in artificial intelligence models, which a great deal of effort has been devoted to in recent years. We therefore believe that this collaboration will enhance the knowledge and accuracy of how artificial intelligence can be used to process population measurements. Furthermore, this collaboration could open up related future projects that can enhance the flow of information regarding the population sizes of various marine species.
Scientists at the Marine Research Institute are at the forefront, and it is crucial for training AI models to have access to their expertise.
